Positive Anicinabe Parenting
Generations of residential school experiences stripped Aboriginal communities from their traditional practices of parenting. Lorraine Boubard of Sagkeeng Child and Family Services is teaching parents their tradition parenting skills again in this video on Positive Anicinabe Parenting. At Sagkeeng Child and Family Services (in Sagkeeng First Nation and Winnipeg, Manitoba) we support and empower our families and community. Services we provide include workshops in parenting, traditional skills like making star blankets, moccasins, hand drums, ribbon shirts and harvesting wild rice. Learn more at www.sagkeengcfs.org.

these teachings are universal. you dont have to identify with any cultural group to have them inside you, and they are not exclusively owned by any group. humility means seeing our connection and relatedness as one human family. its wonderful to hear these teachings expressed in cultures around the world. they are the universal gift of Spirit to all people.

Bacca or Bakka I heard him say in a sentence with creator in it. So I’m assuming that meant creator because in many Middle Eastern countries that’s the creator name they use and it also translates to YHWH of the Bible

I have no native heritage, my ancestors were war immigrants in the 1900s. But being born here, I feel like I should learn the culture of the original inhabitants, and feel we should be following them, they should be the important figures on this land. Not what European colonisation has done.

I can't say How much this video makes me think of my True values and how long I've been finding myself. I'm Ojibwe and Tlingit. I've grown up in my Tlingit culture and I know it. And those teachings. But these feel a lot more of where my Heart gets an Understanding of things.

I am not First Nations. I have always, for reason, felt "connected" to the Ojibwe People. It has to do with a mid 198os, perhaps earlier?, connection to what I'm sure were Ojibwe People and my maternal grandparents. But I have felt a spiritual connection since I was a teenager. I'm in my 60s and it's still there, unanswered. The wolf, the red tailed hawk, the loon, are my spirit helpers. I don't know how to connect. I feel lost in that I know they are there, but I can't tap into them, learn from them, find peace in them. I live in an area where Ojibwe Peoples are not far. I need a Elder to guide me. Can you offer some advice? How do I initiate contact without sounding like a lunatic?

Since being in South Texas, I saw a white owl. The owl has a different meaning here, as she is something very different in beliefs. She wasn't there for me that night, but made a point to make eye contact. She acknowledged me and my strength, but she also needs to follow through.

Please help me, because I need that love, that was closed off to me because I was mixed. Zhawenijgewin = love. That's Ojibwa/Anishinaabe? I think that's beautiful. Been trying to learn. Was ok when in Michigan because I noticed people acknowledged me , but now in South Texas. It's my history that I definitely represent, but was closed to. A paradox of confusion.

Migwetch for your teachings , I am part anishnabeg and I was raised in the white world. My dad did bring me up north to show me how we used to live and when I put my foot in a teepee the first time I felt good , the first time I heard the drum and native music's I felt goose bumps . I do beleive you are right on this one , as soon we have an once of anishnabeg you know those teaching and I do speak from my heart and I am always very honest . A lawyer told me i was too honest and it was causing me problems lol . I don't care i stay honest . I will be rewarded one day for my honesty ❤ migwetch ❤

I love the teaching of honesty, speaking from the heart. Thank you for making these teachings public. I'm gonna write down some ideas I got from this teaching number 4. The idea of paper agreements, contracts, etc. are all for things that are impersonal, when money becomes the basis of relationships. It creates a transactional, impersonal society and a culture of appearances rather than substance where people are definitely going to be unfulfilled. It's when people are forced to act not in their own interests but ruled over by a group of people exploiting them for their own benefit you get people forced into specific roles in a structure not of their own making that they don't have control over and then are forced to carry out the duties of those roles regardless of their own desires, regardless of what's in their hearts. Then you get the conditioning to follow orders and confusion about purpose in life and the dependence on the dominant structures or ruling class for a worldview and direction, e.g. patriotism. Just some thoughts inspired by this video.

I am now just learning to be a person again. I just wanna say that I forgive you Betty, you probably had no clue how much pain you caused. I say this now because you cannot heal the pain you refuse to feel and my god am I feeling it. Thank you for making me into what I am today
